Female genital mutilation (FGM) comprises procedures that alter or cause injury to female genital organs for non-medical reasons.
This harmful practice has lifelong consequences for women and girls. It carries many health risks, including chronic pain, infections, complications during childbirth, infertility, and psychological trauma. In some cases, it can even lead to death.🌍 Every year, more than 2 million girls undergo female genital mutilation worldwide.
230 million girls and women are living with the consequences of FGM.
In Europe, an estimated 600,000 women and girls are affected by FGM.🛑 This practice is not only a severe violation of human rights, health, and integrity, but it is also a form of violence against girls and women that must be eradicated.
We need #zerotolerance for FGM.

🟣 This morning, PES Women concluded its first executive meeting of the year. Members welcomed @linagalvezm, Chair of the FEMM Committee, who provided an update on the Committee’s ongoing work & developments.🟣The discussion moved to touch upon the ‘Roadmap for Women’s Rights’ that will be presented by the European Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness & Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, on 8 March 2025, International Women’s Day. It has been described as a guiding compass for the future European Gender Equality Strategy. Therefore, PES Women will continue to call on the European Commission to reflect our political family’s vision for a feminist Europe in the roadmap as outlined in the S&D’s EU Charter of Women’s rights.🟣They also discussed gender equality related to political developments in some of our member countries. 🇮🇸In addition, PES Women President Zita Gurmai, and executive members welcomed the victory of @kristrunfrosta Kristrún Frostadóttir, a committed feminist and socialist, as the youngest ever Prime Minister of Iceland, now leading a coalition government predominantly made up of women.
